What you need to know about UK Grid Connection rules G98, G99 and G100

In the UK, the access of distributed generation systems is strictly regulated and standardized to ensure that they are safely and reliably connected to the national grid and operate in coordination with it. G98, G99 and G100 are the key rules you should be familiar with in your installation work.

1.G98 connection procedures:

These processes may be followed where you are installing micro-generating plant with an aggregate registered capacity of 16A (3.68kW) per phase or less and the installation complies with the Energy Networks Association document ER G98: "Requirements for the connection of Fully Type Tested Micro-generators (up to and including 16A per phase) in parallel with public Low Voltage Distribution Networks"

All the details you need to know about G98 is showing here below:

2. G99 connection procedures:

These processes may be followed where you are installing generation and energy storage installations that are either rated above 16A (3.68kW) per phase or that do not meet the requirements of the current version the Energy Networks Association (ENA) Engineering Recommendation G98. Where G99 applies, installations must comply with the ENA document ER G99:" Requirements for the connection of generation equipment in parallel with public distribution networks"

All the details you need to know about G99 is showing here below:

3. G100 Export Limitation:

Customers who are seeking to increase the amount of generation or energy storage installed but have been advised an increase in export capacity will require costly or time bound upstream reinforcement, may choose to restrict the net export of their connection rather than wait for or contribute to the reinforcement.

Export Limitation ensures the site's safety and the grid's stability. It will only allow a site to export what the Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) permit.

Requirements for Customer Export Limited Connections:

Export Limitation Schemes must comply with the relevant power quality standards and with ER G100. Generation, including energy storage systems, also needs to adhere to ER G98 and G99 as applicable.

  • The export limitation scheme must reduce the exported Active Power to a value that is equal to, or less than, the Maximum Export Capacity within 5s;

  • The system must be fail-safe. If any of the components or signalling systems that comprise the export limitation system fail or lose power the scheme must reduce the exported Active Power to a value that is equal to, or less than, the Maximum Export Capacity within 5s.

The installer must fill in and submit an Export Limitation Scheme Application form to National Grid (NG) in addition to the relevant generation application forms.

  • Once NG has approved the connection the equipment may be installed and comissioned. In some cases NG will need to witness some of these comissioning tests.

  • The installer must fill in an Export Limitation Installation and Comissioning form and submit this to NG within 28 days.

  • A G99 Fast Track application process has been developed for single phase installations that comprise ER G98 compliant generation (e.g. solar PV) rated up to 16A and ER G98 compliant energy storage rated up to 16A fitted with an ER G100 compliant Export Limitation Scheme that restricts the export to 16A per phase or less. Further information on the G99 Fast Track process is available here
